Smart Bitcoin ETF (BTC)
By introducing New Zealand’s first bitcoin ETF, we offer investors an easy way to gain exposure to bitcoin without the complexities of direct cryptocurrency ownership.
The Smart Bitcoin ETF seeks to reflect bitcoin’s price performance by investing through the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT). It enables investors to gain exposure to bitcoin through an ETF structure, without having to buy, store, or manage it directly.
Listed as a PIE fund on New Zealand’s Stock Exchange (NZX Main Board), you can buy and sell units in the Smart Bitcoin ETF in the same way as a regular share.
Why bitcoin?
Bitcoin, the world’s most recognised cryptocurrency, is valued for its limited supply and independence from traditional financial intermediaries.
As part of a diversified portfolio, bitcoin exposure can help balance traditional investments and taking a ‘core and niche’ approach.
In this scenario, bitcoin should only make up a small proportion of your portfolio. With this approach, bitcoin becomes a niche investment, and even if it sees fluctuations, it won’t undermine your core investments or long-term investing goals.
Is it right for you?
Bitcoin is highly volatile and best suited for those who understand the risks.
Similar to gold, bitcoin doesn't generate an income stream, but it offers exposure to a relatively new digital asset class.
Its significant price swings make it important to approach with caution and we always recommend seeking guidance from a financial adviser to ensure it aligns with your investment goals and risk tolerance.
Smart Gold ETF (GLD)
We offer investors easy access to gain exposure to the gold market without needing to own gold bullion. Bar none!
By investing in the iShares Gold Trust (IAU), the Smart Gold ETF aims to reflect gold’s price performance, offering a straightforward entry into this precious metal.
Why gold?
Gold has long been valued as a store of wealth and seen by some as a safe-haven asset. Gold can serve as a diversifier in multi-asset portfolios and as a potential hedge against inflation.
It can act as a buffer against market volatility, complementing traditional assets like cash, bonds, property and shares.
Gold’s role in your portfolio
Gold tends to have a low correlation with equities and bonds, which can make it a useful diversifier in a balanced portfolio.
It doesn’t generate income, but its scarcity, durability, and global demand have helped it retain value over time. By including a modest allocation of gold, you may increase your portfolio’s resilience in uncertain times.

Consider the risks
Gold’s price can be volatile and unlike stocks or bonds, it doesn’t provide an income.
For investors looking to add gold, we recommend consulting a financial adviser to ensure it aligns with your investment goals and risk tolerance.
